UK solar hits 22.8 GW ahead of plug-in solar rollout

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar power capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts at the end of June 2026, marking another increase in national deployment. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero counted about 2.076 million installations across the country. Households and businesses added 27,391 systems during June. Those projects contributed 132 megawatts of new capacity. The monthly data remain provisional and may change as officials receive further project records.

UK solar hits 22.8 GW ahead of plug-in solar rollout
Britain adds thousands of solar systems before new plug-in standards take effect.

June produced the second-highest monthly installation total in the UK data series. March 2026 remains the strongest month, with 28,782 systems added. Solar capacity grew by 2.2 gigawatts during the year to June, an increase of 10.9%. The country also installed about 269,000 systems during 2025, the highest annual figure on record. Rooftop projects accounted for most installations, while larger developments supplied a greater share of added generation capacity.

The sector now approaches a separate change in rules for small plug-in solar systems. New provisions will take effect on August 27, 2026. They will allow approved microgenerators to connect through a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible equipment can supply no more than 800 watts of alternating current output. Each product must meet Interim Product Specification version 2 and operate safely alongside the local electricity network.

New rules define approved plug-in systems

The legal changes update existing plug, socket and electricity safety regulations. Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, one day after ministers approved it. The measure creates a limited exception for qualifying generators that use standard household connections. A notified body must confirm that each plug meets the relevant BS 1363 requirements. The electricity safety amendment applies in England, Wales and Scotland, while the product approval provisions cover the wider UK market.

The interim standard sets requirements for electrical design, mounting, fire protection, labelling and consumer instructions. It also covers safe disconnection and limits on electricity exported into household circuits. A technical study tested representative systems on domestic wiring under controlled conditions. The equipment operated safely during those tests and showed no sustained unsafe energisation. Researchers also found differences in product quality, including export controls and electromagnetic compatibility, which informed the final specification.

    Consultation shapes retail launch preparations

The government received 466 responses during its public consultation on plug-in solar. More than 85% supported the interim specification, while most respondents also backed the plug amendment. Participants included installers, manufacturers, network operators, technical specialists and members of the public. Some raised concerns about older wiring and products sold without proper approval. Others called for clear guidance to prevent confusion between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems, which remain outside the framework.

Retail preparations have continued ahead of the August start date, with major sellers involved in discussions about compliant products. The rules target small systems for balconies, gardens and other suitable outdoor spaces. They do not cover plug-in batteries or devices that store electricity imported from household circuits. Systems using the new connection route cannot operate legally before August 27. After that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit may connect through a standard household socket.
